Full review and reflection coming soon (I'm still working on it), but for now...here are some great pictures! After a couple delayed flights, I arrived in Huntsville this afternoon. Representatives donning royal blue flight suits greeted me and off we went...first to the University of Alabama dorms then to the US Space and Rocket Center. Tomorrow I get to meet an astronaut and get a blue flight suit of my own! Off to relax a bit. Big day tomorrow! I am one of 200 educators from around the world selected to be part of the 2014 class at Honeywell's Educator Space Academy. So excited and honored to a.) be selected in a highly competitive scholarship program and b.) learn so many exciting ways to engage Old Mill students upon my return. Wow. Fantastic summer ahead. Our Acer C720 Google Chromebooks have arrived. Now, we can move forward with transforming our STEAM Lab into the ultimate vision...a Maker Lab! My goal has always been to create a makerspace where students can work collaboratively and independently on projects of interest. Next, our MakerBot 3D Printer arrives! Off we go.
Watch us on Good Morning Kentuckiana, Monday February 24th between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. or visit www.whas11.com and search for Old Mill.
Our Donorschoose.org fundraising initiative has succeeded. Seven donors, plus the Old Mill PTO, have agreed to fund a MakerBot Academy 3D Desktop Printer for Old Mill's STEAM Lab. We will be the first elementary school in the region with a 3D printer and access to its many possibilities. Old Mill has quickly become the most forward thinking, technologically cognizant school in Bullitt County, the region and possibly the United States - no hyperbole there, folks. Good stuff happening here. Soon the STEAM Lab will be welcoming new friends from Bellarmine University's Annsley Frazier Thornton School of Education. I hope these educators are as inspired by the amazing work of Old Mill students as I am every day. Welcome, Bellarmine University!
Enjoy the extended Christmas break. Bundle up. |
Mr. CoxThese posts are part of my continuing series of weekly tidbits. My goal is to give all stakeholders in our school community the resources and information needed to extend student learning at home, and to share my professional journey with teacher colleagues around the world in the interest of connecting with others equally passionate about the STEAM/STEM/Maker Movement.
